My Tryst With Farming

Farming is a profession of hope. I always dreamt of becoming a farmer. I developed this fascination when I visited some villages while on a project in college. Getting out of the corporate world is like getting out of spiders’ web. So, to keep my passion alive, I had lots of pots and plants in my terrace. Big ones, small ones, green and purple, fancy pink flowers - All.

By virtue of the fact that I had worked with some of farmer based companies, I happened to get an opportunity to design a business plan for a farmer practicing organic farming. The only information that I had on organic farming at that time was the fact that organic vegetables and grains were available in malls and online platforms. It was then, that my research on Organic Farming started. The more I read, watched and heard on Organic farming, the more interested I became in exploring organic farming myself and thus decided to join a Zero budget terrace farming workshop.

I learnt, that the green revolution brought about high yield - by use of artificial fertilizers, pesticides and high yield crop varieties. It is interesting to note how the heavy use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides was leading to contamination of vegetables and grains. This lead to life threatening diseases like cancer. The bigger impact on the economy is that with passage of time, the use of fertilizers and pesticides is increasing in quantity, giving lesser yield and resistant pests, leading to high input costs, which are not being recovered by farmers, ultimately leading to suicides.

In contrast to this, the Zero budget natural farming uses natural fertilizers to make soil healthy, use natural replacements for pesticides, understand and use inter cropping, and no use of hybrid seeds to give much better yield as compared to the chemical farming. It uses the bacteria and living beings in the soil to bring about tilling of the soil and restore certain nutrients to the soil from the atmosphere. Along with that it uses Desi breed cow dung and urine to prepare concoctions which improve the fertility and nutrition levels of the soil.

So I decided to experiment it on my terrace. I was facing extreme pest attack on my plants and had tried all types of pesticides on them, without any results. It only got worse. Because of this, I had only ornamental plants on my terrace. No fruits or vegetables. Nothing to loose, I prepared the pot beds in accordance to what my teacher had taught me and prepared the soil and planted the plants. Farming looks mighty easy when your plow is a pencil and you’re a thousand miles from the corn field. It is only when you get down to it, you realize the amount of skill and labor required.

Apart from my regular ornamental plants, I wanted to try out fruit and leafy vegetables as well. Without sowing a single wheat, you would not harvest thousand ones. So I explored online and bought a box of seeds of various types and put them in those pots. Although I forgot in which pot, I planted which seed, I watered them regularly and waited patiently for the sprouts to appear. I used to observe them everyday and wait for them to grow.  Every blade of grass has its Angel that bends over it and whispers, ‘Grow — grow!’ That’s exactly what I was trying to do. I wanted to harvest chilies, spinach, bitter gourd, beans, brinjal, tomatoes all. As was taught I started preparing the concoction as well, the enzymes to keep the plant healthy and the mulching to keep the soil moist and healthy with bacteria.

And in a week’s time, I saw those tiny green little sprouts coming out from the soil bed. I was exhilarated, in-fact over excited. I wanted to give them all the nutrition to make them healthy and grow fast. Consequently, I experimented and added all bright fruit peels, with their seeds to the pots – in anticipation of giving them more nutrients. To my utter dismay, in a week’s time, it collected enough flies on it to last a lifetime, which started getting into my house. It seemed irrepressible and I had no clue how to control this. Then I referred back to my notes of the training. It was specifically told not to put uncovered fruit peels on the pots since it would attract flies. I then covered my pots with another layer of soil and in a few days was able to control the disaster. Good riddance to bad rubbish.

In the process, I kept on observing the sapling grow along with the small creatures on the soil bed crawling here and there. I continued watering and giving nutrients to my plants and in another two weeks, I saw lush green spinach plant grow up to become a young one. I discussed on my farming group immediately and was suggested that I can start harvesting leaves and new ones will start growing further. My first baby, didn’t want to harvest it so soon. Like a proud parent, I used to look at them everyday and dote on them. And then, one day, I saw it! white at the base, it was a radish plant!!

As you sow, so shall you reap. As it is an exciting and fulfilling journey to see your own babies grow up, so is to see your plants grow up and bear the fruits of your hard work and love. It’s a slightly laborious but very interesting and relaxing activity, which bring you so much closer to the nature. All in all, its completely worth it to have a kitchen garden on your terrace to reap the fruits!

Be careful what you wish for!

Because, if you keep thinking about it and want it to happen, it will happen!

Startup is the buzz word in todays world! Everyone wants to be an Entrepreneur. To be their own boss. And Lucky are those who have the liberty to take that plunge. Having established a business in my earlier assignment, I was confident that I can now handle businesses from inception. Conceptualize, Plan and execute. In the process, re plan and re approach!

The professional need of two people culminates into a business tie up. It was the perfect match. My friend, a very reputed professional, had been organizing some events in a highly specialized IT process consulting domain. As a part of the long term vision, he planned to organize a series of nationwide events. I decided to take the challenge. You got it right! A Corporate event management business. Glamourous, isn’t it!

Sleepless nights were spent onto deciding the business plan and execution strategy. The 4 Ps of marketing come in handy whether you are selling goods or services. Step by step the strategy was designed. A series of smaller events were planned as a precursor to the big one. Multi pronged approach was adopted. Targeting tier II cities along with big cities was planned, academicians involved. Very soon we were travelling, executing the plan, sailing much faster than we imagined.

We nurtured the business. Drop by drop, sweat and blood went into it. It was a big event with participants from across countries, a part of it. And it turned out to be a huge success! As an icing on the cake, my friend was subsequently awarded with the highest honour in the trainer category for his domain.

An excellent entrepreneurial experience along with some big learnings were the key take away. Progressing, we moved ahead in pursuit of our dreams.

Look Good -> Feel Good -- Or Is It The Other Way Round?

Is it true that when you feel good about yourself, you look good too? Have you ever tried to look good when you are frustrated / irritated or sick? Even the best and most expensive of cosmetics can’t make you feel good.

When young, people used to tell me how beautiful I look. Aha! Out of college and into the world of employment, Behold O’ World, Here I come! High on spirits, happiness and excitement in my heart with ambition in my eyes, I looked beautiful, felt beautiful and was ready to conquer the world!

So, what happened now? Eighteen years hence, what has so occurred which made me look old, my eyes puffy and my face wrinkled? Where is that inner happiness lost? Being 100% sure that this happens to everyone, I started looking for solutions. A low phase in life, a mid life crisis or a depression period, tell me a man who hasn’t seen those days.

It does not matter how it happened… what matters most is how to overcome this feeling. I wanted to be happy! What could I do? Indulge in music, dance, sports, drugs, drinks, take psychiatric help or delve deep into prayer? Googling you would find, umpteen ways to keep up that spirit.

I asked a life coach once, how do you keep up that energy within you even at this age of 50? And he answered, what do you do when your mobile phone battery dies out? You recharge it. The same needs to be done with body, mind and soul. Simple!

So, what did I do? No, I did not do anything. I was miserable and my voice and eyes saved no way of showing it to the outer world. My Best Friend introduced me to something very silly. Yes, Silly it was when I looked at it then. Now, it’s a routine for me. It took me couple of months to accept that I needed help. Big Help.

Reluctant to go for these classes, I was pushed forth and I enrolled. It was suggested that I go there with an open mind and attitude, ready to embrace what comes on my journey to peace. The results were phenomenal.

It is not as much about what you do, which classes you enroll or what meditation you do. It is more about giving your 100%, having that faith in yourself and taking that plunge in to your inner sea, through any one of these methods. Trust yourself that you are good, you are in this world for a purpose !

And then you’ll Glow :).

You Can Sell Chocolates !

The will to win, the desire to succeed, the urge to reach your full potential...
these are the keys that will unlock the door to personal excellence.
-- Confucius
A Software Engineer, was once asked to sell chocolates. Result ? Outstanding!

Chocolates of a very popular brand, close to heart to our generation, were a dying product. Reviving this product was hell of a task, which we didn’t know how! But one man knew. He was the then Managing Director of the organization.  I was appointed as the Officer in charge for Maharashtra, for this task. Supported by the Zonal Incharge, I was all geared up for the task.

Just to give a perspective, the chocolate industry is a $50 bn dollar business worldwide and Rs. 10,000 crore in India as on today. Little bit of market research, then, told me, that apart from the brand name, all the other odds were against it. Not even that. The product needed Love. And Faith. And Focus.

Use of Chocolates dates back centuries, from the times of Mayans and Aztecs. It was the food of Gods.  And here we were, searching for consumers ?

We knew the approach of the entire sales team towards the product was of a step child. And the competitors had marched way ahead in the quality, the placements and the branding. We discussed and designed a strategy for re-launch of our Chocolates in a new Avatar.

A Multi Pronged Approach - The product needed quality checks, the pricing needed to be relooked into, the placement would to be made in accordance with 3 S Strategy, and Promotions planned. My Reporting Manager, asked me to work on the project as my own baby. Not because it will benefit the company, but because I should have a story to tell when I grow old !

And so be it ! Marketing is ruling the minds of the customers. And Sales is about Persistence. A combination of the two can bring about deadly results. Each Day is new. Start Afresh and go on till you succeed ! Hard work bears fruits of success. And Consistent Hard work guided by seniors brings about a revolution. Luckily for me, the latter happened.

Till Date, I am known as The Chocolate Girl and will be remembered so !!
